2023 SUMMER

Arts and Culture Calendar
June to September

14th Gwangju Biennale

The theme of the 14th Gwangju Biennale is “soft and weak like water.” It calls for imagining the world as a place of resistance, coexistence, solidarity, and care by thinking through the transformative and restorative potential of water as a metaphor, force, and method. The exhibition not only focuses attention on the properties of water, which embraces contradictions and paradoxes, but also explores the values of art, which present direction and alternatives that enable us to navigate through the complexities of the world.

The Subtle Charms of White Slip Brushing and Coating

Buncheong, a traditional form of stoneware dating from the Joseon Dynasty, is famous for its decorative techniques. Works featuring use of the gwiyal (brushing designs with white slip) and bunjang (coating vessels in white slip) techniques are widely loved today. The spontaneous movements of the brush, the simple and rustic brush marks, the feeling of boundless freedom, and the artless look of the white slip that has flowed down stimulate the sensibilities of people today.
