Graduate Studies Fellowships Awarded to 2008 Program Recipients

The Korea Foundation provides scholarship assistance to foreign students enrolled in graduate degree programs at universities in Korea, in order to support their Korea-related academic pursuits. For 2008, 42 students have been selected as recipients of the Korea Foundation Graduate Studies Fellowship for Foreign Students in Korea program.

The Foundation held an awards ceremony to present scholarship certificates to the selected students at the KF Cultural Center, on March 17. Foundation Executive Vice President Joon K. Park presided over the proceedings and dinner function, which were attended by 27 fellowship recipients from universities in Seoul and other cities.
This year’s 42 scholarship awardees are comprised of 19 students pursuing master’s degrees and 23 enrolled in Ph.D. programs. Their research areas include Korean language and literature (22), social sciences (19), and art (1). These students are from China (15), Japan (8), Vietnam (4), Russia (3), Mongolia (2), and Thailand (2), along with one each from Bulgaria, India, Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Taiwan, Singapore, Nepal and the United States. The Korea Foundation Graduate Studies Fellowship for Foreign Students in Korea program is designed to provide tuition assistance and research allowances to foreign students enrolled in Korean Studies-related master’s or doctoral degree courses in Korea. The selection of fellowship recipients is made on an annual basis. The program strives to support the research activities of these students in Korea in an effort to promote Korean Studies scholarship and foster the next generation of Korea-related specialists who will help to advance the interests of Korea in their home country. Under this scholarship aid program, now in its 15th year of operation, the Foundation places a priority on selecting students from Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Central/South America, where Korean Studies programs are relatively less developed than other regions of the wor ld, in order to encourage the development of Korea-related scholars and support their research activities on Korean Studies areas. Applicants should be M.A. or Ph.D. candidates of Korean Studies, of the humanities or social science fields, at universities in Korea, or have received admission from a relevant Korean graduate school program and required to have adequate Korean-language proficiency. Fellowship recipients are provided with tuition support and research allowances for a one-year period and an opportunity to participate in field trips, twice a year, to visit sites of cultural and historic significance and enrich their personal experiences in Korea.
The Foundation provides fellowship aid to graduate-level foreign students in Korea as well as those in North America, Europe, Russia, Asia, and Oceania. Annually, about 260 graduate students majoring in Korean Studies receive benefits from this program worldwide.
