1.World Children’s Picture Exhibition
August 20-25
Co-hosted by the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation of Korea and the Ieno Hikari Association of Japan, the 14th World Children’s Picture Exhibition was presented at the Korea Foundation Cultural Center. The exhibition featured 180 prize-winning works of the annual World Children’s Picture Contest held in Japan, and 32 works that received awards from the Farm Love Picture and Essay Contest 2007 held in Korea.

2.Korea-Netherlands Governance Forum
August 30
The Foundation provided support to four Korean scholars, including Korea University Graduate School of International Studies Dean Soh Changrok and Yonsei University Professor of Public Administration Mun Myeong-je, for their participation in the Korea-Netherlands Governance Forum, held at Leiden University, Netherlands. Forum participants from the two countries shared their experiences and know-how about governance reform efforts being undertaken in the public and private business sectors.

3. Global Korea Speakers Forum
September 4
In cooperation with the Society for the East Sea, the Foundation organized a roundtable meeting in Washington, D.C. for the presentation of academic and scientific rationale for the naming of the East Sea. The session was attended by some 50 scholars and experts from relevant institutions, including the International Geographical Union, Association of American Geographers, U.S. National Geodetic Survey, and U.S. Library of Congress, who expressed keen interest in the ongoing issue.

4.Tour Exhibition of Traditional Korean Lanterns
September 4-25
The Foundation extended support for a touring exhibition that was staged at the British Museum and Pepperton U.K. Gallery, as well as the front lawn of the London City Hall, at the invitation of the Thames Festival. The exhibition, which featured traditional Korean lanterns, was supplemented by a workshop with demonstrations of lantern-making.

5.Turkey Film Week
September 10-14
In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Korea-Turkey diplomatic relations, the Turkish Embassy in Korea organized a special Turkey Film Week at the Korea Foundation Cultural Center. The five-day cinema event featured five Turkish films, including “Distant,” a recent release that has earned international acclaim.

6.Polish Photo Exhibition: ‘Way to Freedom: From Solidarity to Europe'
September 10-29
The photo exhibition “Way to Freedom” was presented at Gallery Areum of the Korea Foundation Cultural Center by the Polish Embassy in Korea. The exhibition featured 56 photographs of scenes of Poland and other East European countries during various periods since the conclusion of World War II.

7.Invitation Program
In September,
the guests who visited Korea under the Foundation’s Invitation Program included Dr. Andreja Kocijancic, Rector, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia; Mr. Nay Win Maung, Publisher, The Voice, Myanmar; Ms. Tin Tin Win, Writer, Myanmar; Mr. Bulat Sultanov, Director, Institute for Strategic Studies, Kazakhstan; and Mr. Pratap Bhanu Mehta, President, Center for Policy Research, India. The visitors met with their counterparts at various institutions to develop personal relationships, enhance mutual understanding, and promote exchange and cooperation.

Announcement of New Korea Foundation Office
in Tokyo, Japan


The Foundation opened its sixth overseas office in Tokyo, as a means of better facilitating its exchange programs and activities with Japan. A formal opening ceremony for this office is scheduled for late November, which will include a celebratory performance of traditional Korean music and dance.

1. Outreach Programs for the Public, Korean Studies Colloquia

symposium: November 24

Kyushu University is hosting a seminar and symposium series on Korean Studies, based on a theme of calligraphy as seen from the viewpoints of Koreans and Japanese, for the residents of Fukuoka Prefecture. The related events will serve as an opportunity to introduce Korean culture to Japanese audiences, through a lecture on the calligraphy culture shared by Korea and Japan, in addition to hands-on activities and calligraphy demonstrations by prominent Korean and Japanese calligraphers.

3. 2007 Korea-Japan Secondary School Educators’ Exchange
October 3-16

A total of 23 Korean secondary school teachers of history and social studies, who have been selected by local offices of the education ministry, will visit Japan for a 14-day stay to gain firsthand experience about Japan’s education system and culture.

japanese teachers’ visit to korea
A total of 25 Japanese secondary school teachers of social studies and education administrators will visit Korea for a two-week stay to attend lectures on Korea’s politics, economy, society, and culture, visit local schools, meet with Korean students and teachers, experience traditional Korean culture, tour cultural attractions, and participate in home-stay with Korean families.

4. Ninth Workshop for Korean Art Curators
October 4-12
The Foundation hosts an annual workshop for the Korean art curators of overseas museums. For this year, the workshop theme is focused on Korea’s contemporary arts. The workshop is comprised of informational lectures, seminars, and related activities, including visits to museums and cultural sites.

5. Korea-Europe International Young Leaders Program
October 7-14
Next-generation leaders from various sectors, including government, politics, business, academia and culture, of 28 European countries have been invited to Korea to enhance their understanding about Korea and its people, through discussion sessions, visits to relevant organizations, and tours of cultural/historic attractions.

6. Performing Arts Market in Seoul 2007
October 9-12
Of the various activities related to the Performing Arts Market in Seoul (PAMS) 2007, exhibition booths and academic sessions are being held at the Korea Foundation Cultural Center. The PAMS is an annual event held to promote systematic and cost-effective presentation of and to encourage overseas tours of Korea’s performing arts groups.

7. International Cervantino Festival in Mexico
October 9-16
The Foundation is extending support to the Kook Soo-ho Didim Dance Company for its performance of traditional Korean dance at the International Cervantino Festival, a global cultural festival annually presented in Mexico.

8. Reading Books, 30 Blissful Faces’ Photo Exhibition
October 15-20
To observe the designation of September as a “Reading Month,” a photographic exhibition is being presented to emphasize the importance of reading and to promote a culture that encourages people to read more. The display features 60 photographs of 32 book-loving celebrities reading books.

9. Niemeyer Exhibition
October 16-20
The exhibition features photographs of the architecture of Oscar Niemeyer, the legendary architect of Brazil, who in 1957 master planned the development of Brasilia, the new capital of Brazil. With 32 photographs, the exhibition vividly portrays the people- and environment-friendly architectural works of Niemeyer, which look more like hand-made sculptures rather than concrete structures.

10. Sixth Korea-Germany Forum
October 18-20
With support from the Foundation, the sixth Korea-Germany Forum will be held in Munich, Germany. A total of 40 specialists of foreign policy, security, economy, trade, and journalism from Korea and Germany will attend the forum to discuss such key issues as security of the Korean Peninsula, Europe’s integration process, and prospects for the conclusion of an FTA between Korea and the European Union.

11. Next-Generation Leaders Program for Russian
October 18-24

The Foundation is hosting the visit of ten young Russian leaders, representing the government, political, parliamentary, and cultural sectors, to Korea. During their stay, they will have an opportunity to enhance their understanding and familiarity of Korea and develop personal networks to promote future Korea-Russia exchanges, through visits to relevant organizations, as well as selected cultural/historic sites and industrial complexes.

12. Tour-Lecture Program to Middle East Countries
October 22-28
A lecture series on Korea-related subjects will be presented by Korean specialists at universities and institutions in the Middle Eastern regions, in an effort to enhance understanding about Korea and lay the groundwork for more active exchanges in the future.

13. Global Korea Speakers Forum
October 23-26
The Foundation is sponsoring a lecture program on Korea’s history and national interests that includes sessions in New York, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles. The featured speaker is Kim Yongdeok, President of the Northeast Asian History Foundation, whose lectures will be followed by discussion and Q&A sessions. In particular, the presentations are targeted for historians and scholars with an interest in Korea and Northeast Asia.

14. Ireland Photo Exhibition
October 23-31
The exhibition will feature some 70 photos taken by photographer Heo Yong Sun, which depict the wonderful natural scenery and local residents of Ireland, the Land of Erin.

15. Korea-Vietnam 15th Anniversary Contemporary Art Exchange Exhibition
October 24-November 3
To commemorate the 15th anniversary of the establishment of Korea-Vietnam diplomatic relations, a “Korea-Vietnam Contemporary Art Exhibition: Good Morning Vietnam, Good Morning Korea” is being staged at the Korea Foundation Cultural Center. The exhibition will feature some 50 works of eight Korean artists and 11 notable Vietnamese artists, which highlight the people’s creativity and individuality in coping with the socialist regime in the 1980s.

16. Foundation Fellows Autumn Field Trip
October 25-27
A three-day field trip is being arranged for Korea Foundation fellows, who are currently staying in Korea as participants of the Foundation’s fellowship programs for field research, Korean language training, and postdoctoral studies, and related programs, such as visiting professors and Korean Studies scholars from developing countries. The field trip will enable the Foundation fellows to personally experience the traditions, culture, food, and other aspects of Korea.

17. Third Korean Studies Conference in Central and South America
October 29-30
With assistance from the Foundation, the third Korean Studies conference is being held for Korea-related scholars in the Central and South American region. The participating scholars will get together to share their research results on Korean Studies subjects through the presentation of papers in various fields.
