Field Research Fellowship

Overview

In order to promote Korean studies overseas, the KF invites outstanding scholars and experts from abroad to Korea, supporting their on-site field research and facilitating access to resource materials in-country.

Eligibility

  • Overseas Korean studies researchers working in the humanities, social sciences, or arts and culture; OR overseas researchers with a plan to conduct research on an important topic that requires close cooperation with Korea (eligible to apply for Type A or Type B support)
    • ™Type A: Doctoral candidates working on a doctoral dissertation after completing all coursework
    • Type B: University professors (at the rank of full-time lecturer or higher) or researchers with a doctorate degree

Support Details

  • Monthly stipend (Type A: KRW 2,300,000/Type B: KRW 3,000,000)
  • Support for entry expenses (one-time payment)
    • Tenured associate professor: KRW 1,000,000
    • Tenured full professor: KRW 1,500,000
  • Travelers insurance (for the duration of stay in Korea)
  • Round-trip airfare (shortest distance economy flight)
    Provided only to Fellows whose country of residence is included on the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) list of ODA Recipients, as per the official OECD website (eg. least developed countries, other low-income countries, and lower-middle income countries; upper-middle income countries are excluded)

Responsibilities of Fellows

  • Doctoral candidate (Type A) Fellows must
    • submit a report, using a KF report form, prior to the end of the fellowship period.
    • make efforts to submit their doctoral dissertation and obtain their doctorate within two years after the end of the fellowship period. Upon acquiring their doctorate, they must submit their doctoral dissertation to the KF.
  • Faculty member (Type B) Fellows
    • must submit a report, using a KF report form, prior to the end of the fellowship period.
    • are encouraged to publish an article in an A&HCI/SSCI/SCOPUS journal or academic journal registered with their respective country’s ministry of education within two years after the end of the fellowship period, OR publish a book within three years after the end of the fellowship period. Any such published article or book must be submitted to the KF.
  • All Fellows are required to acknowledge the KF when publishing any article or book as an outcome of the research conducted with the assistance of the KF’s fellowship programs.
  • The KF monitors Fellows’ research achievements annually for three years after the end of the fellowship period. Should Fellows fail to fulfill their responsibilities, the KF may restrict its assistance to them in future.
  • A certain amount of research incentives are provided (annual budget permitting).
